A Lesson from the Football Field

By: Morgan Hause

Read: 1 Corinthians 9: 24-27; Philippians 3: 12-14

Imagine with me for a moment, if you will, you’re standing on a football field.  What comes to your mind?  Probably football, right?  Well, while the football field’s main purpose is to be used for football games, it also can be a place some of life’s greatest lessons like “ get out of the way or you’ll get run over.”  One of the greatest lessons is a lesson on perseverance.  When I played football, people looked at me and thought, “ This kid is going to die.”  It was easy to see why they thought this being that I was the shortest kid on the team.  I could have given up my very first practice but I had been taught that you should always finish what you start so I didn’t quit.  Some might think I was just being stubborn, but I wasn’t.  There is a difference between stubbornness and perseverance.  Stubbornness is when you won’t give up a way of life to make difficult for others.  Perseverance is not giving up no matter how hard it gets.  I kept playing, and, as strange as it may sound, my size was a boon to the team.  Because of my size, I was able to slip through the line and make tackles.  Because I persevered, I helped my team.  Even though 8th grade was my last year, it doesn’t mean I’ve decided to give up.  It’s for the best.  But because I played football, I learned that it is important to persevere in everything you do.  Philippians 4:13 says, “ I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”  We need to trust God in everything we do and he’ll give us the strength we need to persevere in whatever we do.  So the next time you feel as if you’re not going to make it, remember, don’t worry and just keep on persevering.

If you need help to persevere, pray this prayer.  This prayer is good to repeat before you try something that you need help to persevere in.  Just pray this:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for your love and kindness.  Please help me to persevere.  I can’t do this without your help and guidance.  Give me the strength I need in order to complete this task I have been given.  Don’t let me quit.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen

Memory from 2011 Facebook. Too funny to forget!

Has anyone heard of a switch in the magnetic poles? We've got a boyscout compass that insists on pointing south all the time.
Comments
Kelley Dendel something about that coming from your family, does not surprise me!
Darrel Drummond You got one of the new ones. When it points South go the opposite direction. If that does not work, wait till dark and follow the north star.
Bill R Pedler Must have gotten a pre-release version of the 2013 model. But, yes, the North Pole is moving by about 70 miles per year.
Dawn Elaine Hause I knew Iceland gets larger by a foot or so every year because of the Atlantic ridge, but I didn't realize that the pole was moving that fast! Thing is, Mike can't remember when he got the compass. That was too long ago... He was just starting scouts.
Karen Lochte Well if north is really south, does that mean east is really west?
Deborah Sprague Clark Oh my gosh!!! You guys are confusing me!!!
Karen Lochte Wow! So if you want to go southeast to get to the North Shore, do you really have to go northwest to get to the South Shore? This could be a terrific hike! Be sure to take photos for us all. Hee-hee-hee.
Mike Hause Or does it simply point to that which you truly desire...where's the rum?
Deloris Watts
Deloris Watts Time to buy a new compass.
Karen Lochte Furthermore, if you were to stand at the south pole, would it point north? Or would it still point south?
Dawn Elaine Hause So, does that mean that North America is now South America, and Northern Europe is now Southern Europe, and Eastern Europe is now Western Europe, and East Asia is now West Asia, and South Africa is now North Africa? Also, if the North Pole is moving at 70 miles a year, would that mean that Kalamazoo is now the North Pole?
Dawn Elaine Hause Yes, I dreamt of this all night!!!
Barbara Tackett Hollis This is some very heavy thinking you guys. It does seem like the we are at the North Pole... today anyway!!!!
Dawn Elaine Hause Oh my goodness! I just happened to think... if North is South and East is West, what do we do with the Middle East and the Mid West????
Dawn Elaine Hause Okay, so We are discussing the compass oddity and Cameron says: Mom, you have a compass in your night stand drawer. He goes to get it, and IT points north. Put it next to the boyscout compass and it goes wacky. Now, the other compass is the one my step dad got when he was in the 3C's... MUCH MUCH older than Mike's really old compass. Hmmmmm......
Karen Lochte Well, boy howdy! The plot thickens......
